Wayfinding Ideas

Looking at a book I found on way finding, we were given a wide range of precedents to draw from that would help create a more stylistic and helpful way finding experience at the market event.

Presenting Our Team Role

Today we presented the ideas we discussed earlier in our meetings as to how we define our role as 'wayfinding' and what we plan on doing to help people find there way throughout the marketplace. The feedback we got given includes;

  • Think about how we want people to experience the space? Do we want them to know exactly where everything is and where they are going (through the use of maps/brochures) or do we want it be experienced as an adventure, and no one knows where they are going - suitable to the 'escapism' them.
  • Think creatively about how we can help people through the space - look at precedents such as Keminoko & Co whose latest installation 'Miniature Hikes' introduced a series of small huts located across Wellingtons backyard to help hikers find they're way through each track.

Now we need to collaborate more deeply with Layout and Event Design so that we know the direction in which we are heading, also doing more creative research and finding artist precedents that help represent how people experience shopping and market spaces.

Preferred apps - for group communication

Trello and Google Calendar

Trello

Positives
Can use visual material - important as working with a lot of visual work (way finding)
Collaborative - everyone can access and makes changes (as opposed to google keep which was a little limited in that you could only share posts)
App - easy to use, on android and iPhone

Negatives
Not familiar with the app layout

Google calendar

Positives
Already used by most members of the group
Efficient for organising meetings, working in with busy schedules

Negatives
Not visual
Not versatile - can't add to do lists or slides
Sends you a million notifications

Defined Role: Wayfinding

Meeting 4/08/2

In this meeting we created a rough outline for our budget, timeline and defined role.
We also came across some points such as:

  • Creating guidelines for the maker teams (regarding signs, banners, stickers, etc). This is so each team can be found easily through our wayfinding plans and each team is represented in a fair way.
  • Sustainability and the place it has in both the market and our role. We decided that we want our wayfinding to be sustainable regardless whether it is apart of the overall market or not. To accomplish this goal we talked about the materials that we would use and the impact which they would create both environmentally and visually. Our main materials/resources at this point are going to be projectors, cardboard, recycled paper and other recycled resources (these can be dependant on the theme).
  • How we will help make the experience through wayfinding. We don't want to just get people from A-B, we want to make it and experience.
  • Needing to set up meetings with the layout, marketing and atmosphere teams in the next few weeks and more specifically the layout team closer to the market date.
  • More site visits to help us with placement of signs/banners/lettering and our overall designs.
  • Budgeting. We decided on a rough budget of $250 ($50 ea) which will still allow us some room for things that go wrong. However this budget may be adjusted accordingly depending on our designs and materials needed.
  • Timeline. Refer to picture.

Week 3 Class

  • Teams pitched their overall visions and top 3 roles that they wanted
  • Each team went around and voted one team for each role
  • Teams were placed in groups and subgroups
  • Our individual team received the role of wayfinding which is apart of the Events team
